Are they the same thing? Are they something to do with Java? As I said, I have the KMail icon in my panel because I added it there with k=>Panel Menu=>Add Application to Panel. What you see in the system tray is the original rate. If the connection was initially very noisy, but got better, your throughput can improve, but the rate displayed won't change. But that you got an initial rate of only 300 bps would indicate a very noisy line and one likely to cause a disconnect.
